You arrive at the carnival at around 6:30, while everything is still in full swing, but slowly starting to wind down. It's a family-centered carnival, so rather than couples staying out until the latest hour, the crowds have already begun to thin out to something more manageable. As a result, the air has also gotten a bit colder, more damp. Hope you brought a jacket. Warm-colored lights are strung up against the stalls and buildings, with various fall and thanksgiving-themed paraphernalia posted up against the walls. Turkeys, leaves, gourds, ... more leaves...

He surveys over the general area, but he seems to be looking over the games almost as much as he is the general surroundings and people, the usual nooks and crannies. “We can vote on which game to play first,” he says.

This carnival is situated near downtown as a temporary pop-up for the holidays, so regular business outside of the alotted park area goes on as usual. Tall buildings housing businesses wall you all in from the surrounding blocks. Meanwhile, all the carnival buildings are temporary stalls made of wood and plastic, for the most part, save for the port-a-potty bathrooms. There are some rides. She shifts on her feet, watching the Ferris wheel go up and up.

She settles wherever there is room, when she gets the chance. Her gaze towards the window, looking out into the twinkling lights in the distance. The glow from the carnival fades as they rise higher, gently illuminating her profile. She seems very relaxed. "This is exciting, no?" she says without turning away. Her tone is softer than usual. He grasps the railing, pushes himself up, then grabs the edge of the wooden roof. With another heave, he gets himself to the top of the squat structure. He keeps a look out.

A glint. His eyes snap over. The rooftop. If he starts chasing now, the chances of taking down the assailant are good. Already tensing, he jerks his head back towards the Ferris wheel. Backlit by the booming glow of a firework, he sees a slim figure climbing atop a swaying cart. Another, even smaller form follows. What the hell is she doing? The cart sways once. Twice. Then, a leap. What's the point in stopping an assailant if the person they're supposed to protect ends up pancaked on the ground from a broken neck? "Shit!" He twists towards the opposite side of the wheel.

"KANEMARU!"

He barks out, pointing towards the direction of the rooftop. She has a gun. She said she could shoot. Take care of it. Pushing himself off the structure, Frankie leaps towards the ground and starts running towards the Ferris wheel. @Rey ✨Hotaru

He recalls glassy-eyed goldfish, their bellies wobbling to and fro. They swim in circles. The water's surface is hazy and neon-bright. He'd been the only one who didn't play. , Frankie kills his first man. A month later, one becomes two. Cade isn't wrong. He comes in parts. One life, bifurcated into two. You might survive, but you can't fuel a living on violence alone. There's a Frankie who strips at poker and laughs loud, who shoots the shit on Saturday evenings and snatches back stolen fries with a frown. There's a Frankie who sneaks into movie matinees without paying and a Frankie who drives off wrong exits into the next town.

He SLAM!s open the closing rooftop door behind Cade, his palm striking hollow sheet metal with enough force to make it shudder. Outside, the rain comes in a downpour.

When he looks into the mirror in the morning and combs his hair back, his fingers shifting to adjust a tie, that's not the man he sees. The skeletons in his wardrobe don't make him happy, but they did make him. He lives with that.

Sheets of water are sweeping towards overflowing drainage channels, but the sky doesn't relent. Ahead, he hears the light, incessant beat of Cade's footsteps. He follows, his own footsteps slapping against the wet rooftops in forceful, rythmic splats.

He leaps over an upcoming railing, wet palm slapping against rounded iron as he propels himself up and over feet-first, hips swiveling midair to strike a two-footed landing. Twenty feet away, two weapons begin to raise.

Beneath him, the water flowing towards the drainage pipes has turned pink. He breathes heavy, feeling the clinging drops of water against his lips suck towards him with each inhale. Over the edge of the roof, he hears the sound of something hitting a hollow unit - air conditioner, maybe - before landing on the ground with a sick smack. Still, the rain continues to comes down like a thousand beaded pearls. Behind him, Arthur splashes onto the rooftop. -# > "You-!" He hears faintly. -# > "—really are a fucking idiot!" He blinks away the water from his lashes and looks over, panting as he takes in the scene. Somehow, between the sound of Arthur's threats and his litany of questions, Frankie finds himself making eye contact with Cade. On one hand- yes. It's true that he was born like this. On the other hand- it's taken time to become this. At age 13, It killed Itself. -# █████████ was a gloomy, empty husk. It retreated into the fantasy of books, and even still, books were not something of a love to it. Just a diversion. It didn't care if it was good or bad at anything. It was good at chemistry, but chemistry meant nothing to it. And its parents agonized over what a useless thing they'd brought into the world. -# Of course, the thing got tired one day. Of living. -# It failed to quit, thanks to a good Samaritan who didn't know what it was. -# He realized that it all didn't matter. Not any of it mattered. He always knew, but. It was as if the whole world had opened up to him. Anyway, that was not, in fact, the story of how he learned the feeling of fear-of-death. That happens much later. But he did gain a sense of clarity, as well as a sense of gratitude. It was maybe the first time he was ever thankful for everything in his entire life. In other words, he was a very late bloomer.

He went home almost feeling like he'd promised to live for the sake of that old man's feelings. Of course, he did not care about such a stranger. While Frankie and Arthur went ahead, she'd stay behind with Zachary and Hotaru as a little medical assistant~ As always, she'd do as she was told. Grabbing whatever Zachary needed to stop the bleeding.

She admired how he was always so cool and collected. He was kind too. Since that day on the roof, she could tell. That kindness betrayed him sometimes, a small crack in his otherwise unchanging expression. The way his lashes flutter ever so slightly when someone's life was threatened in front of him. It was charming.

Every now and then, she'd gently brush the hair from Hotaru's eyes and coo small words of comfort. Lightly holding her cheek as she swipes any sweat or stray blood away with her thumb. No panic in her eyes, no fuss. In fact, she'd find it a little funny seeing her bloody jacket a few feet away, while Hotaru's blazer still hung around her own shoulders. -# She'll give it back when asked. An adrenaline high is a natural response in the body, pumped into the bloodstream when you're find yourself in danger. There's one of three things that can happen: Fight, flight or freeze. People gravitate to one of these responses, a natural instinct in response to danger. You can't change this part of yourself, no matter how hard you try. For Hotaru, her response has always been to run-- run as fast as she can in any direction. And if that direction is towards more danger or away, she can't control that. Her legs are still shaky from forcing herself to continue onwards, when every fiber in her body screamed at her to turn away. She ran, to the building, to the stairs, to the door leading to the roof. But she couldn't get it open. Ever the coward who can't commit to things when it matters most. --- There's a light sweat on her brow as Zachary treats her, a rough bandaging and staunching of the wound. She's lost a lot of blood-- how much exactly, she can't tell. But it paints the sleeve of Almond's jacket red, an ugly stain that spreads further the more she moves around. She doesn't have the strength to control her expression. She looks tired, fatigued, almost dazed. "Did I..?" A hiss, as Zachary continues to work on the wound. It hurts.
